Mrs. Claudia Thomas Mitchell is the former Vice President of the Montgomery County Board of Education. A retired Montgomery Public School teacher, she dedicated 27 years to teaching science and technology in our community. She taught physical science at Cloverdale Jr. High, Lee High School, Floyd Jr. High, and developed the curriculum for the Center for Advanced Technology Magnet at Booker T. Washington Magnet High School. Her award-winning technology students garnered over 70% of competition awards throughout the Southeast during her tenure.
Upon retirement, Claudia continued serving students and the community through her volunteer work in District 6.
She contributed as a member of the BTW Magnet High School F.A.M.E. Board and on the Seth Johnson Neighborhood Association Executive Committee. Additionally, she tutored students in the Johnson Elementary After School Program, served as the youth advisor for the Metro Montgomery Chapter of the NAACP for over 10 years, and remains an active member of both Delta Kappa Gamma Educational Society and the Montgomery (AL) Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
Her awards and honors include being named the Alabama Council for Technology Education - State Technology Teacher of the Year, Floyd Jr. High School Teacher of the Year, recipient of the Alabama Educational Technology Conference Sparkman Scholarship, and appointments to the State of Alabama Textbook Committee by the Governor for 2015-2016 & 2021-2022. Most recently, she was honored with the 2023 All-State School Board Member award by the Alabama Association of School Boards, the association's highest honor.
A proud graduate of George Washington Carver High School, Claudia earned both her B.S. and M.S. in biology and chemistry from Alabama State University. She and her husband Arnold Mitchell, a retired forensic chemist, have enjoyed over 40 years of marriage. They have three accomplished children, all Montgomery Public Schools alumni. In her free time, Claudia delights in reading with her book club, quilting, and crafting fun and educational projects for her seven grandchildren.
